Let’s be honest, aviation has steaming hot tea! Things passengers wonder about but rarely get explained. Why does the aircraft sometimes wait? Why do airlines keep saying, “Boarding is almost complete,” when you can still see people buying snacks? Why does the captain sound completely relaxed when everyone else is silently praying during turbulence?
So fasten your seatbelt, weekend tea is served!
Tea No 1: Your flight time is NOT your arrival time.
A scheduled departure time includes a whole chain of activities that MUST happen before the aircraft can leave safely. Check-in, security, boarding, baggage, documentation, aircraft’s preparation, and operational checks. So when airlines tell you to arrive early, they’re not trying to ruin your morning.
Tea No 2: “But the aircraft is still there.”
We know. It’s right there. You’re looking at it, but here’s the tea. An aircraft being at the airport does not mean boarding is still open. There are procedures and timelines that have to be followed before departure. Aviation is basically one giant group project where everyone has to submit their parts on time and unlike school, there is no, “Please give me five more minutes.”
Tea No 3: The final boarding announcement means BUSINESS.
“Final boarding call for Mr. Lagbaja” means “Oga, where are you? That aircraft does not know you “personally-persona-personally.” Final calls exist because the airline needs to close the boarding process and prepare the aircraft for departure.
Tea No 4: Your pilot is not just flying the plane.
That calm voice saying, “Ladies and gentlemen, welcome aboard…?” There is a lot more behind it than a microphone and a uniform. Pilots are constantly monitoring weather, aircraft systems, fuel, navigation, air traffic, and operational conditions.
So when the captain says, “We will be experiencing some turbulence,” that is not the moment to start recording your farewell video. It’s time to fasten your seatbelt.
Tea No 5: And finally, aviation is teamwork.
What passengers see is usually the aircraft, the cabin crew, and the pilot. What they do not always see is the enormous working before, during, and after every flight.
From flight operations to engineering, dispatch, ground handling, customer service, security, baggage teams, airport personnel, and countless others, aviation is one giant relay race. Everyone has a role, and when everyone does that role properly, the passenger simply gets to sit back and say, “What a smooth flight.” That, by the way, is the whole point.
So what’s the weekend tea? Aviation may look glamorous from the outside, but behind every smooth journey is a serious amount of planning, coordination, expertise, and occasionally controlled chaos.
