State council accepts Prof. Amupitan’s nomination as New INEC Chairman

The National Council of State has approved President Bola Tinubu’s nomination of Professor Joash Amupitan as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

The National Council of State gave its unanimous backing to the nomination. The move was described as a significant step towards maintaining credibility in Nigeria’s electoral system, as council members expressed confidence in Amupitan’s capability to lead the commission.

The presidency emphasized that the nominee is not affiliated with any political party, underscoring his neutrality. The Council believes his legal background and regional representation will bring fresh perspective to the leadership of INEC.

The nomination follows the end of Professor Mahmood Yakubu’s tenure, who served as INEC Chairman from 2015 until October 2025. With this appointment, Professor Amupitan became the first person from Kogi State in the North-Central zone to lead the electoral commission.
