House Of Reps calls on FG to use all diplomatic channels to secure safe return of Goodluck Jonathan from Guinea-Bissau

The House of Representatives has called on the Federal Government to use all diplomatic channels to secure the safe return of former President Goodluck Jonathan, who remains in Guinea-Bissau following a military coup. Jonathan was in the country as part of a joint African Union, ECOWAS, and West African Elders Forum mission to monitor last weekend’s presidential election when the takeover occurred.

During Thursday’s plenary, lawmakers highlighted the urgency of the situation, stressing that Jonathan’s safety is a matter of national importance. The Deputy Speaker and the House Leader noted that the former president’s extensive experience in election monitoring across Africa and beyond makes his presence in Guinea-Bissau critical for international observation efforts.

Although the debate did not focus on the coup itself, the House emphasised the need for swift action to ensure Jonathan’s protection and safe repatriation. Government authorities have reportedly been notified and are taking measures to facilitate his return.

The call underscores Nigeria’s commitment to safeguarding its officials abroad and supporting democratic processes in the region, even amid sudden political crises.
