IKOM LGA Chairman Host Chief Judge on Correctional Centres Tour.

The Executive Chairman of Ikom Local Government Area, Hon. Pst. [Mrs] Mercy Nsor, has received the State Chief Judge, Hon. Justice Akon B. Ikpeme, on a courtesy visit to various correctional centers in the state. During the tour, the Chief Judge exercised her “Prerogative of Mercy” by setting free Nine Inmates who had demonstrated good conduct and met specific criteria for release.

The released inmates were freed on various grounds, including advanced age and good behavior during their incarceration.

Some were also released due to the minor nature of their offenses, which no longer warranted their continued detention.

This act of mercy is in line with the ongoing efforts to reform the correctional system and ensure that justice is tempered with compassion.

The Controller of the Ikom Prisons, CSC A.T. Shir, expressed his appreciation to the Executive Chairman for her unwavering support of the correctional facility. He noted that Hon. Mercy Nsor is the first Chairman in the history of Ikom LGA to visit the prison during such important occasions, highlighting her commitment to the welfare of inmates and prison warders.

 

The Controller also commended the Chairman for consistently providing relief materials to both the prisoners and the prison staff, demonstrating her dedication to their well-being.

In her response, the Executive Chairman, Hon. Mercy Nsor, took the opportunity to tour the correctional facility, gaining firsthand experience of the challenges facing the institution. This visit underscores her commitment to the welfare of the inmates and the prison staff, as well as her determination to support initiatives that promote rehabilitation and reintegration.

The visit by the Chief Judge and the Executive Chairman is a significant step towards promoting justice, compassion, and reform within the correctional system. It also highlights the importance of collaboration between government agencies and stakeholders in ensuring the humane treatment of inmates and addressing the challenges facing correctional facilities.
