Labour Party National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, has urged Nigerian politicians to embrace issue-based politics and put the country’s interests ahead of personal ambition as preparations gradually begin for another election cycle.
She made the call while speaking to journalists during the 80th birthday celebration of former Plateau State Governor and elder statesman, Senator Jonah David Jang, in Jos on Friday.
According to Usman, democracy can only succeed when political leaders compete with ideas rather than bitterness and division.
“The next election should not become a battle against fellow Nigerians,” she said.
“It should be a contest of ideas, competence and character. When elections are over, we all return to the same Nigeria. Patriotism must always come before politics.”
She said Nigerians deserve leaders who unite people instead of dividing them and who inspire hope rather than fear.
“Our political parties may differ, but our country is one. We owe future generations the responsibility of conducting politics without destroying the bonds that hold our nation together,” she added.
Usman also appealed to politicians and their supporters to avoid inflammatory statements capable of deepening tensions.
According to her, history remembers leaders who strengthened institutions, protected democracy and placed national interest above personal gain—not those who created unnecessary conflict.
She maintained that disagreements are natural in a democracy but should never become a reason for hatred.
“We must disagree without becoming enemies. Democracy thrives on tolerance, respect for different opinions and an unwavering commitment to peace,” she said.
Reflecting on Senator Jonah Jang’s milestone birthday, the Labour Party chairman described him as a statesman whose decades of service in the military and public office have earned him a respected place in Nigeria’s history.
She said his career reflects discipline, sacrifice and dedication to national service, first as a military officer and later as Governor of Plateau State and a senator.
“At 80, Senator Jonah Jang represents a generation of leaders whose lives remind us that public office is about service, honour and legacy. Today, we celebrate not only his long life but also his lasting contribution to nation-building,” she said.
Usman concluded by praying for God’s continued blessings, good health and many more years of meaningful service for the former governor.
