The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, has thrown the party’s weight behind plans to mobilise support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election ahead of the 2027 general election.
Yilwatda gave the assurance on Wednesday while receiving members of the APC Progressives Local Government Chairmen’s Forum at the party’s National Secretariat in Abuja. The group had visited to seek the party’s endorsement for a proposed mega rally in support of President Tinubu.
He said the APC would work closely with elected local government chairmen to strengthen its grassroots structures and build momentum ahead of the next general election.
“I want us to work together. If we build a strong partnership, we will position our party for victory in 2027,” Yilwatda said.
The APC chairman also pledged the party’s support for any lawful initiative aimed at strengthening its political base.
“Anything that will help our party succeed, as long as it is within the law, we will support it. The party will stand with you every step of the way,” he added.
Yilwatda urged the council chairmen to become strong ambassadors of the Tinubu administration by taking government policies and programmes directly to their communities.
He reminded them that local governments are the closest level of government to the people and therefore have a shared responsibility in improving the lives of ordinary Nigerians.
“If people are still facing multidimensional poverty, you also have a responsibility because you are the closest government to them,” he said.
Earlier, the Chairman of the APC Progressives Local Government Chairmen’s Forum and Executive Chairman of Chanchaga Local Government Area in Niger State, Dr Mustapha Jibril Alheri, said the forum consists of 685 APC local government chairmen across the country.
He said the group was created to promote President Tinubu’s policies, strengthen the APC at the grassroots and mobilise support ahead of future elections.
According to Alheri, the forum has also helped attract more members into the ruling party.
“We have 685 local government chairmen under the APC, and we have continued to bring more people into the party,” he said.
He expressed confidence that local government officials would play a key role in determining the outcome of the 2027 elections because of their close relationship with voters.
Alheri also praised President Tinubu for supporting stronger local government administration, saying empowered councils would accelerate development at the grassroots.
