Group Seeks Independent Probe Onto Death Of Umahi’s Personal Physiotherapist

NWIA Urges Tinubu to Order Independent Probe Into Mary Habila’s Death

Mary Habila reportedly died at the residence of the Minister of Works, a development that has generated widespread public attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.

In an open letter dated July 13, 2026, the organization said a credible and impartial investigation was necessary to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system. The letter was jointly signed by NWIA President Mrs. Omolara Abike, Vice President Mrs. Ogonna Chiedum, and Secretary Dr. Mariam Adeosun.

The group made it clear that it was not accusing anyone of wrongdoing, stressing that every Nigerian is entitled to the constitutional presumption of innocence and due process.

According to the alliance, the nature of the incident and the public interest it has generated make it imperative for investigators to carry out a professional, independent, and transparent inquiry.

“This letter is not an attempt to declare anyone guilty,” the organization stated. “Every Nigerian deserves the protection of due process. However, those who hold high public office also have a greater responsibility to submit themselves to public scrutiny.”

NWIA noted that its concerns were also influenced by previous complaints and public allegations that have, over time, been linked to the Minister of Works. However, the organization emphasized that these claims have not been proven and should not be treated as established facts.

Rather, it argued that when multiple concerns arise involving a public official, it is the responsibility of the appropriate authorities to investigate any credible allegations fairly, independently, and without bias.

The group maintained that transparent investigations involving public officials ultimately strengthen democratic institutions and reinforce public trust in government.

NWIA further warned that any perception of interference or lack of transparency could have far-reaching consequences, including weakening confidence in public institutions, discouraging victims and witnesses from speaking up, damaging Nigeria’s reputation for accountability and good governance, reducing investor confidence, and worsening political divisions.

To ensure the integrity of the process, the alliance called on President Tinubu to guarantee that the investigation proceeds strictly in accordance with the law. It also urged authorities to preserve and properly examine all forensic evidence, including the autopsy report, protect witnesses and complainants from intimidation, uphold the constitutional rights of everyone involved, and make the outcome of the investigation transparent.

Addressing the President directly, the organization stated that the true measure of his administration would not be whether allegations emerge, but whether justice is applied equally, regardless of status or political influence.

While reaffirming its support for the Tinubu administration’s development agenda, NWIA urged the President to demonstrate that no public official is above the law and that every Nigerian life is equally valued and protected.
