Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan Defends Cash Empowerment Scheme Amid Public Backlash

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has defended her decision to distribute millions of naira in cash to constituents during an empowerment program in Kogi Central, saying the initiative was designed around the needs and preferences of beneficiaries.

The lawmaker explained that her experience with previous empowerment programs influenced the decision to offer direct financial assistance instead of distributing only business equipment. According to her, some beneficiaries who received items such as sewing machines later sold them to raise money for business expenses or other pressing needs. She said cash grants would give entrepreneurs greater flexibility to start businesses, restock their shops, expand operations or purchase essential materials. The explanation was contained in a statement issued in Abuja by her media aide, Mike Idoko.

The senator’s remarks followed criticism on social media after videos and photographs showing large amounts of cash being distributed at an event marking her third anniversary in the 10th National Assembly went viral. Some critics questioned the public display of the money and whether direct cash handouts represent an effective approach to constituency development and long-term poverty reduction.

Akpoti-Uduaghan maintained that businesses have different financial needs and that direct grants could provide practical support. In her anniversary message, she expressed appreciation for the opportunity to serve and described the program  as part of her efforts to strengthen local businesses and create better economic opportunities across Kogi Central. She said the initiative supported entrepreneurs in agriculture, tailoring, content creation and small-scale manufacturing, among other sectors.

The empowerment program was held on November 2, 2026, as part of activities marking her third year in office. Beneficiaries reportedly received grants ranging from ₦100,000 to ₦5 million, depending on their business requirements. Some received ₦2 million, ₦3 million and ₦4 million, while others were reportedly given up to ₦5 million through bank transfers.
