Officials of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control NAFDAC have arrested two individuals for allegedly tampering with expiry dates on products at a warehouse in Apata, Jos North, Plateau State.
The operation, led by North Central Zonal Director Kenneth Azikiwe, was part of NAFDAC’s ongoing effort to ensure product safety, especially ahead of the festive season. Azikiwe explained that expired products, including wines and hot drinks, were cleaned with chemicals to remove original dates and relabeled with new ones.
Two suspects Yusuf Hassan, who applied the altered dates, and Emma Nwobi, the facility owner who provided the labels were taken into custody, while further suspects are being sought. Azikiwe urged consumers to check manufacturing and expiry dates on product labels, rather than stickers, and remain vigilant when purchasing regulated goods.
