Benfica Confirms Mourinho As Head Coach

Jose Mourinho has been appointed as the new coach of Benfica, the Portuguese club confirmed on Thursday.

The 62-year-old signed a two-year deal less than three weeks after being sacked by Turkish side Fenerbahce.

Mourinho’s dismissal came after losing to Benfica in the Champions League qualification playoffs. He now replaces Bruno Lage, who was removed earlier this week following a 3-2 home defeat to Qarabag.

Mourinho, who had his first taste of top-flight management with Benfica back in 2000 will now mark his 12th managerial job.

Across a decorated career, the Portuguese has lifted 26 major trophies with clubs including Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Real Madrid, Manchester United and Roma.

His first game in charge will be against AVS in the Primeira Liga on Saturday. Later this month, he will return to Stamford Bridge when Benfica face Chelsea in the Champions League. He will also meet Porto on October 5 in the domestic league.
