Ethiopia Inaugurates Africa’s Largest Hydro-electric Dam

Ethiopia has officially inaugurated the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam, marking a major milestone in Africa’s infrastructure and energy development. The $5 billion dollars project is now the largest hydroelectric dam on the continent.

The ceremony, attended by dozens of African heads of state and government, celebrated the dam’s potential to transform Ethiopia’s economy, end widespread blackouts, and support its transition to electric vehicles  especially after the country banned the import of gasoline-powered cars.

As waters flowed into the massive turbines, citizens across Addis Ababa gathered to watch the event on large screens, dancing to traditional music in celebration.

Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed called the dam a big achievement that demonstrated the capability of African nations to lead and execute large-scale infrastructure projects. He maintains that the dam is essential for its development and will bring shared benefits to the region
