Chelsea have completed the signing of experienced striker Danny Welbeck from Brighton in a deal reportedly worth £5 million, with the former England international putting pen to paper on a two-year contract.
The 35-year-old will immediately join Xabi Alonso’s squad for the club’s pre-season tour as Chelsea continue reshaping their team ahead of the new campaign.
Welbeck’s arrival is a notable shift from Chelsea’s recent transfer strategy, which has largely focused on signing younger players with long-term potential. In fact, this is the first time the Blues have paid a transfer fee for a player older than 26 since bringing Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Barcelona in 2022.
Speaking after sealing the move, Welbeck admitted it was an opportunity he simply could not ignore.
“When you hear Chelsea are interested, it fills you with immense pride,” he said.
“This is a club with a rich history and a winning mentality. I’m honoured to be here at what feels like a very exciting time. I’ve spoken with the manager, know a few of the players already, and I feel a real connection.
“I’ve still got that fire in my belly, and I’m ready to give everything to help this club succeed and make the supporters proud.”
New Chelsea boss Xabi Alonso is believed to have pushed for more experience after the club’s disappointing 10th-place finish in the Premier League last season.
Welbeck arrives after enjoying one of the best seasons of his career at Brighton, scoring 13 Premier League goals in 37 matches, following a 10-goal campaign the previous season.
His signing could also cast fresh doubt over the futures of Chelsea forwards Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson and Marc Guiu as competition for places intensifies.
Welbeck is the latest player to swap Brighton for Stamford Bridge, following the paths of Joao Pedro, Moises Caicedo, Robert Sanchez and Marc Cucurella, although Cucurella completed a move to Real Madrid earlier this summer.
Chelsea have been busy in the transfer market, having already signed England forward Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for a British record £117 million. They also secured defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace and young Italian defender Marco Palestra from Atalanta.
The Blues have also been linked with veteran England midfielder Jordan Henderson as Alonso continues to add experience to his squad.
Welbeck leaves Brighton after six memorable years, having joined from Watford in 2020. During his time with the Seagulls, he scored 51 goals and provided 18 assists, becoming the club’s highest Premier League goalscorer.
Brighton chairman Tony Bloom paid tribute to the striker’s impact.
“Danny has made an incredible contribution to Brighton,” Bloom said.
“His goals, performances and experience helped us through some of the biggest moments in the club’s history. Beyond that, his leadership and character earned him enormous respect from everyone here.”
