The House of Representatives today held a special plenary session focused on Nigeria’s national security challenges, hosting a delegation from St. Kitts and Nevis, led by Speaker Lanein Blanchette, alongside representatives from the United States Embassy.
Lawmakers reviewed a consolidated Internal Assessment compiled by several committees, detailing security incidents nationwide, emerging trends, oversight outcomes, and the status of previous resolutions. Committees on defence, national security, police affairs, human rights, foreign affairs, interior, women and youth development, and emergency preparedness presented evidence-based briefings.
Speaker Tajudeen Abbas emphasized that Nigeria’s sovereignty is non-negotiable, while reaffirming the country’s long-standing partnership with the US and expressing willingness to collaborate on security matters. He also highlighted the ongoing consideration of the Religious Freedom Accountability Bill, citing targeted attacks on both Christian and Muslim communities.
