Thirty-five Kebbi Schoolgirls regain freedom

Thirty-five students abducted from the Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi State, are back in safe custody after days in captivity. Their release comes as a significant relief to families and residents of the Danko-Wasagu area, where tension had been high since the attack. Authorities say the schoolgirls have not yet been reunited with their families, but security and government officials are overseeing the process.

Federal authorities secured the students’ freedom through what they describe as a non-kinetic strategy. Behind the scenes, efforts were coordinated by personnel from the Office of the National Security Adviser and the Department of State Services, who worked to bring the incident to a peaceful end.

The abduction, along with a similar incident in Niger State, had raised national and international concern and prompted heightened military orders to fast-track the rescue efforts. Officials say the successful operation marks an important moment for communities affected by repeated mass kidnappings and signals a growing government preference for peaceful methods in resolving such crises.
