The Nigerian media industry has been thrown into mourning following the tragic death of Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, a rising journalist and news anchor with ARISE News Channel.
Maduagwu, 29, was killed in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, during an armed robbery attack at her residence in the Katampe area of Abuja. The Nigeria Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
Confirming the development in a statement, ARISE News described Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie,” as not only a cherished member of its newsroom but also a vibrant media voice who connected deeply with viewers across the country.
“Somtochukwu was a news anchor, reporter and producer who embodied passion and professionalism. Beyond the airwaves, she was also a trained lawyer, a supportive colleague and a friend to many,” the management said.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu had quickly risen in Nigeria’s broadcast industry, earning admiration for her poise, intellect and engaging delivery on screen. Her death has sparked shock and grief among colleagues, viewers, and media professionals nationwide.
The ARISE News management extended condolences to her parents, siblings, extended family, friends, and loved ones, while calling for a “speedy investigation, apprehension and prosecution of the culprits.”
“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory,” the station said.
The untimely killing of the young journalist has reignited concerns over insecurity in Abuja and other parts of Nigeria, where cases of armed robbery and violent attacks have remained a growing threat.
