Passenger train services on the Abuja-Kaduna corridor will resume on Wednesday, October 1, according to the Nigerian Railway Corporation. The route had been suspended following an incident on August 26 that disrupted operations and reignited concerns about passenger safety. A new timetable has been released ahead of the resumption, with trains from Abuja departing Idu station in the morning and returning from Kaduna’s Rigasa station in the afternoon.
The NRC said the decision to restart the service is part of ongoing efforts to ensure reliable and secure rail transport across the country. In the wake of the August disruption, the corporation says it has reached out to the majority of affected passengers. Out of the 583 people onboard during the incident, over 500 have reportedly been refunded, and all 22 injured passengers have been contacted and visited by medical personnel.
To ease the impact on victims, the NRC is offering one free ride per week until the end of 2025 for those injured, and a one-time free trip for all 618 passengers who were on board that day.
