The Federal Government has strongly rejected claims that terrorists in Nigeria are carrying out a systematic genocide against Christians. In a statement on Sunday, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, described the allegations circulating on some international platforms as false and divisive. He warned that framing Nigeria’s security crisis as a religious war oversimplifies a complex situation and risks fuelling further tension.
Idris stated that terrorist groups operating in the country have targeted Nigerians across all religious backgrounds. The minister emphasized that Muslims, Christians, and even non-religious citizens have all been victims of extremist violence. He also pointed to recent gains in the fight against terrorism, including the killing of over 13,000 terrorists and the rescue of nearly 10,000 hostages between May 2023 and February 2025.
The federal government further highlighted the successful prosecution of over 700 Boko Haram suspects and the capture of leaders from the Ansaru terror group. Officials say these developments show progress in counterterrorism efforts and reaffirm Nigeria’s commitment to religious harmony and national unity. The administration insisted that Christians in Nigeria are not under threat of genocide or systematic persecution.
