Tensions are escalating in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo DRC after the M23 rebel group staged a military parade in Goma, showcasing over 7,000 fighters, a move that has raised fresh fears of renewed conflict and threatened ongoing peace efforts.
The rebel group claimed the new recruits include surrendered Congolese soldiers and local militia members, but human rights groups have voiced concerns that many of them may have been forcibly conscripted.
The show of force comes just weeks ahead of a planned peace agreement in Washington, involving Congo, Rwanda, and regional mediators. A key part of the proposed deal is the withdrawal of Rwandan support for M23 and the return of captured territories to Congolese authorities. However, recent clashes and mutual accusations of ceasefire violations are already casting serious doubt over the viability of the deal.
