Nigeria Strengthen Local Battery Sector With Collaborative Efforts

The Federal Government has announced new collaborative efforts with private sector investors aimed at strengthening local battery manufacturing and expanding access to cleaner, affordable energy alternatives.

At the launch of a mobile solar generator and youth bootcamp held in Abuja, the Chief Executive Officer of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Mustapha Abdullahi, said the government is taking concrete steps to bridge the country’s energy gap by localising the production of batteries and solar components.

Abdullahi revealed that the government has been in talks with several international investors to establish battery production plants within Nigeria. He noted that he recently signed memoranda of understanding MoUs in China and London with some of the world’s largest solar component manufacturers, paving the way for the establishment of local factories.

He reiterated that this move is part of President Bola Tinubu’s broader energy transition strategy, which aims to ensure that 30% of Nigeria’s energy mix comes from renewable sources like solar, wind, and hydro, reducing reliance on gas-powered energy.
