The Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) has confirmed that the United States has imposed a new $80 (₦123,000) duty on all shipments from Nigeria, excluding letters and documents.
The fee, effective 29 August 2025, follows an executive order by former US President Donald Trump suspending duty-free treatment under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).
“All postal items to the US, except letters and documents, will now attract prepaid customs duty of $80 at acceptance in Nigeria,” NIPOST said in a notice.
The new charge applies to all countries, not just Nigeria, and shipments will also undergo US customs checks on arrival.
The development comes just a week after Washington hiked tariffs on Nigerian exports, sparking talk of retaliation from Abuja.
