Akpabio Pledges Support for Police, Commissions New Quarters in Akwa Ibom

President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, at the weekend reaffirmed his commitment to the welfare of security agencies in Akwa Ibom State, declaring that nothing would be considered too much to ensure their comfort as they protect lives and property.

Akpabio, in a statement issued by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom, on Sunday, gave the assurance on Saturday while commissioning fully furnished police quarters at Nto Ndang in Obot Akara Local Government Area of the state.

He commended the State Commissioner of Police, Baba Mohammed Azare, and his men for their efforts in sustaining peace and security, stressing that his administration would continue to prioritise their welfare.

He said, “I commend the Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, for doing a good job in the state.

“Through his leadership and collaboration with other security agencies, we now have peace and security in Akwa Ibom.

“Nothing is too much to be done for our security agencies to ensure that as they secure our environment, they also return home to a comfortable living environment.

“We will continue to do our best in the area of their welfare,” he added.

The Senate President also disclosed that President Bola Tinubu had approved the establishment of a Police College for the training of cadet officers.

He added that construction had already commenced.

According to him, the first set of cadets would be admitted before the end of the year.

Responding, the State Police Commissioner, Baba Azare, expressed appreciation to Akpabio for his longstanding support to the police.

He recalled similar gestures during his time as governor of the state.

“Your support is unprecedented, and it didn’t start today. We promise to put in our best to further secure the people and the state,” he assured.

Earlier, Akpabio, according to the statement, also commissioned an ultra-modern market, ICT Centre, and classroom blocks in Obot Akara.

He urged residents to take ownership of the projects to prevent vandalism.

“We were a consumption country before.

“President Tinubu wants us to be a productive country.

“We need to produce.

“We need to convert our agricultural products to goods and I don’t see why people are crying.”

According to Kalu, Brazil once faced the same economic hardship Nigeria is facing, but they overcame the troubling waters.

He also posited that the relationship between President Tinubu and his Brazilian colleague, President Lula Da Silva, was in the best interest of the country, noting that Nigeria would greatly gain from their friendship.

He emphasised that Nigeria was giving a lot of freebies, which wasn’t helping the economy, and this new disruptive ways of doing things right must be encouraged.

He said: “President Lula da Silva saw the same things many years ago before he was elected in 2003 and this is how Brazil was.

“I know that. I was there with President Thabo Mbeki for the swearing in, in 2003.

“So, I want the friendship of President Ahmed Bola Tinubu and President Lula da Silva to continue because we’re going to gain a lot from that friendship and I believe that the economic policies of President Tinubu might be harsh today, but it will be better tomorrow.

“We are giving everything for free, but Tinubu is bringing back the economy where it’s supposed to be. We have done so many good things.”
