Senate Confirms Ayo Omidiran as New Federal Character Boss, Approves 37 National Commissioners

The Senate has confirmed Hon. Ayo Hulayat Omidiran as the new Executive Chairman of the Federal Character Commission. Lawmakers also approved 37 nominees to serve as national commissioners, representing each of the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The decision followed the adoption of a report from the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs.

Committee members reported that all nominees met the required documentation standards and underwent full screening, with no criminal petitions raised against any of them. Omidiran, a two-term member of the House of Representatives, is well regarded for her work on community development, women’s empowerment, and fairness in governance, qualities senators believe will strengthen the commission’s leadership.

Once sworn in by the President, the new chair is expected to bring a more disciplined and transparent approach to the agency. Lawmakers say they anticipate reforms that will help the commission carry out its constitutional mandate more effectively.

The newly confirmed national commissioners include representatives from every state and the FCT, among them Peter Ogbonna Eze of Enugu, AbdulWasiu Kayode Bawa-Allah of Lagos, Mohammed Musa as Secretary, and a full slate of others from Abia, Jigawa, Kebbi, Osun, Adamawa, Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Bauchi, Bayelsa, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Delta, Ebonyi, Edo, Ekiti, Gombe, Imo, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Kogi, Kwara, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba, Yobe, Zamfara, and the FCT.
