Musa Yar’adua varsity workers suspend strike

The joint congress of the four in-house unions of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University, Katsina, has suspended its ongoing strike with immediate effect. The congress comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, Non-Academic Staff Union, and National Association of Academic Technologists. The decision followed a series of constructive engagements and negotiations with a committee set up by the Katsina State Government, aimed at pursuing and finalising mechanisms for sustainable industrial harmony in the university.

The resolution was contained in a statement jointly signed by Chairman, UMYU In-House Unions, Dr Murtala Abdullahi, and Secretary, Saminu Salisu, and made available to newsmen on Thursday in Katsina. The statement read, “This decision was reached after the state government’s committee agreed to address the critical demands that led to the strike, including: (a) the suspension of the incursion and takeover of the University’s portal by a third-party company. FlexiSaf Edusoft Limited; (b) agreement on the payment of appropriate salary structures for all staff in the University; and (c) other issues in contention that are anchored around government policies.”

“The committee’s commitment to faithfully implementing the agreed terms, as captured in the Memorandum of Understanding jointly signed by all parties, was pivotal in resolving the matter. “However, it is important to note that one issue remains outstanding, which is the payment of the 34 months’ arrears owed to our members. “On this particular matter, the Chancellor of the University. Senator Ibrahim M. Ida (Wazirin Katsina) graciously intervened and personally appealed to our members to suspend the strike, assuring that concrete steps would be taken to resolve the issue within a reasonable timeframe.

“In the spirit of respect, trust, and the Chancellor’s credible assurance, our members have agreed to temporarily suspend action on this demand.” The unions expressed appreciation for the support and commitment of the university visitor, the intervention of the Chancellor, the efforts of the state government’s committee, and the patience of students, parents, guardians, and the public during the turbulent period. “We remain steadfast in our commitment to the progress and stability of Umaru Musa Yar’adua University and reaffirm our readiness to cooperate with all stakeholders toward sustaining industrial harmony in the institution”, the statement read.

The joint congresses of the in-house unions at UMYU initiated a two-week warning strike from November 3, 2025, because the government failed to address their long-standing demands, including the payment of unpaid arrears from salary adjustments, accoutrements, and hazard allowances, delayed promotions, and poor working conditions.
