Barau Unveils N200m Empowerment Scheme for 10,000 Less Privileged in Kano

Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Jibrin Barau, has launched a N200 million empowerment programme targeting 10,000 less privileged persons across Kano State.

Under the initiative, which will be implemented through the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation (BIJF), each beneficiary will receive a cash grant of N20,000 to support small-scale economic activities and household welfare.

A statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, on Sunday, said the selection process for beneficiaries will commence on Thursday, October 9, 2025, with the distribution of application forms across all 44 local government areas of the state.

According to the breakdown, 6,500 beneficiaries will be drawn from Kano North Senatorial District—500 from each of its 13 local government areas—while 112 persons will be selected from each of the local governments in Kano Central and Kano South Senatorial Districts.

Mudashir explained that the initiative forms part of Senator Barau’s continuous efforts to alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods through targeted interventions in education, health, agriculture, security, and transportation.

“The programme underscores Senator Barau’s enduring commitment to improving living conditions and expanding economic opportunities, particularly for women and youth,” the statement said.

It added that the Barau I. Jibrin Foundation has over the years undertaken several humanitarian projects, including a postgraduate foreign scholarship scheme for indigent students from Kano State.

The foundation, regarded as one of the leading private social intervention platforms in Northern Nigeria, focuses on tackling poverty, promoting education, and advancing community development.

According to Mudashir, the new N200 million disbursement reaffirms Senator Barau’s belief that empowering women and youth remains vital to driving growth and inclusive development not only in the North but across Nigeria.
