The Independent National Electoral Commission has dismissed claims that Nigerians have lost faith in the country’s electoral system, pointing instead to strong turnout in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration exercise. According to the commission, the surge in participation, particularly among young people, reflects public confidence in the process.
INEC reported that within seven hours of the CVR portal opening on August 18, over 69,000 Nigerians had pre-registered online. By August 24, the figure had risen to more than 1.3 million, and within two weeks, the number surpassed 2.5 million registrations.
The commission stressed that while online pre-registration is a first step, all applicants must complete the process in person at designated centres to capture their biometrics, in line with the Electoral Act. INEC says these figures underline citizens’ willingness to engage with the system and prepare for upcoming elections.
