NiMet, C-WINS Partner to Deliver Climate-Smart Solutions in Nigeria

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has sealed a groundbreaking partnership with the Centre for Well-being and Integrated Nutrition Solutions (C-WINS), a move designed to strengthen Nigeria’s fight against climate change and its ripple effects on food security, health, soil quality, and rural livelihoods.

The collaboration aims to roll out tailor-made early-warning systems for local farmers, helping them plan ahead and reduce losses from unpredictable weather. Beyond weather forecasts, NiMet and C-WINS will co-host hands-on community workshops, teaching farmers how to apply climate-smart agricultural techniques guided by real-time data. This, they say, will not only improve harvests but also protect communities from climate-linked health risks through timely alerts.

Speaking at the official signing, NiMet’s Director-General, Prof. Charles Anosike, stressed that climate intelligence should no longer be a luxury but part of daily decision-making.

“By embedding climate data into food, health, and agricultural systems, we can cut risks, strengthen nutrition security, improve soil health, and help communities withstand disasters,” Anosike stated. He reaffirmed NiMet’s resolve to keep supplying reliable weather forecasts as the backbone of this partnership.

Echoing this, Dr. Mahmud Mustafa, Head of Missions at C-WINS, described NiMet as a vital ally.

“C-WINS will take NiMet’s data straight to grassroots communities,” he said. “We’ll train health workers, engage directly with farmers, and ensure climate information is not just available but also useful and locally relevant.”

Together, the two institutions envision building resilient communities where farmers boost yields, health workers respond quicker to risks, and rural populations are better equipped to adapt to the realities of a warming planet.
