The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has called on Border Patrol Commanders across Nigeria to strengthen their commitment to safeguarding the country’s borders, describing them as the nation’s first line of defence against external threats.
Speaking during a strategic conference held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, the IGP emphasized the critical role of the Border Patrol in protecting Nigeria’s sovereignty, preventing bloodshed, and defending the nation’s identity.
He highlighted the vast and complex nature of Nigeria’s land borders and extensive maritime corridors that link the country to the Gulf of Guinea, acknowledging the ongoing efforts of the Border Patrol Unit in responding to evolving border-related crimes.
According to Egbetokun, modern security challenges demand modern solutions. He urged the commanders to prioritize intelligence-led policing, community engagement, and inter-agency collaboration, stressing that these are vital to effective border security operations. He reassured officers of the Force leadership’s commitment to improving their welfare and support systems.
