Over 100 persons remain unaccounted for in India following sudden cloudburst

More than 100 people remain unaccounted for and at least one fatality has been confirmed after a sudden cloudburst triggered flash floods in India’s northern state of Uttarakhand. The disaster struck Dharali village in the Uttarkashi district on Tuesday, when a surge of water tore down from the mountains, engulfing roads, buildings, and farmland in its path.

However, access remains a challenge for other emergency personnel and local authorities due to severely damaged roads and relentless rainfall. The region has been battered by heavy monsoon rains in recent weeks, with Uttarkashi among the worst-hit districts. Over 130 people have reportedly been rescued so far.

The flash floods were triggered by a cloudburst—a sudden, intense downpour—aroun, which caused the Kheerganga river to overflow with alarming force. Torrents of muddy water cascaded down the steep terrain, leaving destruction across multiple villages and sparking a large-scale emergency response in the Himalayan state.
