Federal government calls for restoration of democratic rule in Guinea-Bissau

The federal government has called for the restoration of democratic rule in Guinea-Bissau, following the take over by the military in the West African state. Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa described the takeover as a serious violation of democratic principles and a threat to stability in both Guinea-Bissau and the wider West African region.

Nigeria expressed solidarity with the people of Guinea-Bissau and urged the protection of all detained individuals, including election observers, while stressing the importance of respecting the outcomes of the recent elections. The fedreal government called on all parties involved to exercise restraint and engage in peaceful dialogue.

Ebienfa warned that those responsible for the coup would be held accountable for actions that could undermine democracy and plunge the country into chaos, reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to upholding constitutional governance and safeguarding democratic institutions in the region.

As a key member of ECOWAS and the African Union, Nigeria pledged to work with regional and international partners to restore order and ensure the swift return to democracy in Guinea-Bissau, emphasizing the promotion of peace and stability across the continent.
