President Bola Tinubu has sent the Legal Practitioners Act Repeal and Re-enactment Bill to the National Assembly, advancing a major effort to reform the legal profession in Nigeria.
The correspondence, read today by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, explained that the proposed law aims to strengthen ethical standards in legal practice, enhance professional accountability, and broaden access to justice nationwide.
Key features of the bill include, Issuance of practice licences for lawyers, A compulsory two-year tutelage period for newly admitted legal practitioners, Mandatory continuous professional development requirements and Broader regulatory updates intended to modernise legal practice in line with global standards. The bill is expected to undergo first reading as lawmakers begin consideration of the proposed reforms.
