The Federal Inland Revenue Service has refuted claims by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar that the appointment of Xpress Payments as a federal revenue collection channel was politically motivated.
In a statement on Sunday, Aderonke Atoyebi, Technical Assistant on Broadcast Media to the FIRS Chairman, called Atiku’s assertions misleading and said they risk politicising a purely administrative and technical process.
She explained that FIRS currently uses multiple Payment Solution Service Providers. including Quickteller, Remita, Etranzact, Flutterwave, and XpressPay to make tax payments accessible nationwide. Atoyebi stressed that the onboarding of payment providers follows a transparent, competitive process, designed to strengthen accountability and foster innovation within the fintech ecosystem.
