Nigeria’s hopes of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup were dashed on Sunday after the Super Eagles suffered a dramatic 4–3 penalty shootout defeat to the Leopards of DR Congo in the African play-offs final.
The tense encounter, played in Rabat, Morocco, ended 1–1 after regulation and extra time. Nigeria struck early when Frank Onyeka fired home just three minutes into the match, giving the Super Eagles a bright start and early momentum.
Despite several opportunities to double their lead, Nigeria failed to convert their chances. DR Congo gradually gained control of the match, increasing pressure on the Nigerian defence. Their persistence paid off in the 32nd minute, when Mechak Elia equalised following a sustained spell of attacking play.
With no goals in the second half or extra time, the match went to penalties. DR Congo held their nerve and converted four of their spot-kicks, while Nigeria fell short with only three successful attempts. The victory sends DR Congo into the intercontinental play-offs scheduled for March next year, while Nigeria will miss the World Cup.
