President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has presided over a high-level joint session of the Council of State and the Police Council, convened to address urgent national security issues and advance ongoing reforms in Nigeria’s policing system. The hybrid meeting is being held at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja.
The session has drawn participation from both serving and former government leaders. Notably, former Heads of State, Generals Abdulsalami Abubakar and Ibrahim Babangida, joined virtually, while several former Chief Justices, including Alfa Belgore, Walter Onnoghen, Tanko Muhammad, and Kayode Ariwoola, are attending in person.
Top government officials at the session include Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas, National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu, Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila, and Attorney-General of the Federation Lateef Fagbemi. The Chairman of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, is also present.
A broad group of state governors from across the country is participating in the meeting. Among them are the governors of Lagos, Rivers, Ogun, Enugu, Imo, Kaduna, Yobe, Kebbi, Benue, Ebonyi, Kogi, Edo, and Sokoto, reflecting a nationwide commitment to strengthening security and governance structures.
