SSANU, NASU Protest Federal Government Over Welfare Demands

Members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and the Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions, NASU, staged a protest at the University of Abuja main campus today, in a coordinated nationwide action against the Federal Government’s failure to meet their welfare-related demands.

The protest follows the expiration of a two-week ultimatum issued by the unions’ Joint Action Committee, demanding urgent attention to key issues, including the renegotiation of the long-standing 2009 agreement, payment of recently approved 25 and 35 per cent salary increments, and the immediate release of withheld salaries.

At the demonstration, university workers carried placards with messages directed at the government, warning of an impending industrial crisis if their demands continue to be ignored. The placards urged authorities to act swiftly to maintain peace and stability in Nigeria’s higher education sector.

The protest at the University of Abuja mirrors similar actions across campuses nationwide, as SSANU and NASU escalate pressure on the government to prioritise the welfare of non-academic staff. The unions have signalled that failure to address these concerns promptly could lead to a full-scale strike in the coming weeks.
