FIFA Opens Investigation Into claims Mokoena Played Against Lesotho Despite Suspension

FIFA has opened an investigation into South Africa midfielder Teboho Mokoena amid claims he played while suspended in a World Cup qualifier against Lesotho.

The governing body confirmed on Thursday that its Disciplinary Committee is reviewing the case, which stems from the March 2025 international window.

Mokoena was reportedly due to serve a one-match suspension after accumulating yellow cards in earlier qualifiers. Despite this, the 28-year-old played 90 minutes in Bafana Bafana’s 2-1 victory in Johannesburg.

If South Africa are found guilty of breaching Article 55 of FIFA’s Disciplinary Code, the result could be overturned and Lesotho would be awarded a 3-0 win, while Bafana Bafana would forfeit the points.

Mokoena has been a central figure in South Africa’s qualification campaign and was part of the squad that won bronze at the 2024 Africa Cup of Nations. He also plays a key role at club level with Mamelodi Sundowns.

FIFA has not indicated when a verdict will be delivered, though disciplinary cases of this nature often take several weeks to conclude.
