Over 123 million Nigerians captured in National Identity Database.

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) says no fewer than 123 million Nigerians have been captured in the country’s national identity database with their National Identification Numbers.

The announcement was made in Abuja during the 7th National Day of Identity, where the Director General/CEO of NIMC, Abisoye Coker-Odusote disclosed that progress has been made beyond the country’s borders, with 52 percent of Nigerians in the diaspora enrolled, while 85 percent of inmates in correctional facilities have also been registered. She said over 200 enrolment centres have been set up nationwide and abroad to ease access.

The agency disclosed that about 125 government institutions have harmonised their systems with the NIN, cutting enrolment time by nearly half and eliminating extortion of citizens during the process. The upgrade, it added, reflects ongoing efforts to strengthen identity management.

NIMC further assured the public that its database remains secure and uncompromised, stressing that the infrastructure is built to global standards to protect the integrity and trust of the system.
