The Federal Government has raised a new flood alert, warning of anticipated heavy rainfall and potential flooding in 14 states and 52 communities across Nigeria, including major urban centres like Lagos and Adamawa.
The alert was issued by the National Flood Early Warning Centre under the Federal Ministry of Environment. The official notice, signed by Usman Abdullahi Bokani, Director of the Erosion, Flood, and Coastal Zone Management Department, outlined the risks expected during the period from September 16 to 18.
According to the ministry, forecasts indicate that these areas may experience intense and prolonged rainfall, which could lead to serious flooding, disrupt daily activities, and endanger lives and property. The states identified as high-risk include Akwa Ibom, Anambra, Adamawa, Cross River, Bayelsa, Delta, Kaduna, Kebbi, Katsina, Ondo and Lagos.
The Federal Government advised residents in the affected areas to remain vigilant, follow weather updates, and take necessary precautions to safeguard lives and property. Emergency management agencies have also been placed on high alert for rapid response in case of flooding.
