US Embassy Restate Visa Fees Remain Non-Refundable As Nigeria Decry Repeated Denials

The United States Embassy in Nigeria has reminded applicants that visa fees are non-refundable and non-transferable, even when a visa is denied. The clarification came in response to complaints from Nigerians, particularly students and visitors, who expressed concern over the financial strain of repeated denials without refunds.

In a statement shared on X, the embassy explained that the visa fee covers the cost of processing each application, whether approved or not. Applicants were advised to prepare thoroughly and use official resources to improve their chances of success.

The standard U.S. nonimmigrant visa fee is $185 dollars, while work and religious visas cost $190 dollars, K visas $265 dollars, and E visas $205 dollars.

The embassy also reminded applicants to schedule interviews in their country of residence, adjust social media accounts to public for vetting, and noted that under a presidential proclamation effective June 9, 2025, visa issuance remains restricted for nationals of certain countries deemed security risks.
