The Federal Government has officially abolished the 5% excise duty on telecommunications services, offering a much-needed reprieve to millions of Nigerian mobile users already grappling with high service costs.
The now-revoked tax, which covered voice calls and data usage, was initially introduced under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari. It was part of broader efforts to increase government revenue but quickly came under fire from industry stakeholders and consumer advocacy groups.
The announcement was made via a statement posted on the official X handle of the National Orientation Agency NOA. According to the post, Aminu Maida, Executive Vice Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC, confirmed that President Bola Tinubu ordered the removal of the tax during recent discussions surrounding the newly enacted Finance Act.
