The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a 23-year-old woman, Nmesoma Josephine Nwoye, for allegedly faking her own abduction to extort ransom money from her parents.
Nwoye was said to have conspired with her 24-year-old boyfriend, Chibuike Ogbu, to carry out the staged kidnap. Police confirmed that her parents paid ₦3 million as ransom before the suspects were apprehended.
Spokesperson of the Command said a total of ₦1.2 million was recovered from the duo, being part of the ransom collected.
The suspects are currently in custody and will be charged after investigations are concluded. Police warned against the rising cases of individuals faking their own kidnap, stressing that such actions amount to criminal offences punishable under Nigerian law.
