UN Deputy Secretary-General, Mohammed, Calls For Shift In Peacekeeping

The United Nations Deputy Secretary-General, Amina Mohammed, has called for a bold shift in how peacekeeping and security are approached across Africa, warning that current political and financial systems are failing to meet the continent’s needs.

Amina, at the African Chiefs of Defence Staff Summit in Abuja, emphasised that African nations are not just recipients of global peacekeeping support, but also major contributors to it. She noted that nine out of the world’s top 15 contributors to UN peacekeeping efforts are African countries, with troops actively serving in Somalia and the Central African Republic.

Amina stressed that efforts to silence the guns in Africa must go far beyond disarmament. She noted true and lasting peace requires confronting the root causes of conflict such as inequality, poor education, and lack of economic opportunity and ensuring that investments are directed towards building resilient, inclusive, and just societies.
