NLC Rejects Plans to Hike Politicians’ Pay

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has warned against any attempt to increase the salaries of political office holders, calling it “insensitive and unjust”.

Amid reports that the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is considering a review, NLC President Joe Ajaero demanded full disclosure of politicians’ current pay.

“This move will only widen inequality at a time when workers are struggling with stagnant wages and rising poverty,” Ajaero said.

He recalled that while civil servants got less than a 50% wage review, politicians enjoyed increases of over 800%.

Ajaero warned that rewarding public office as a path to wealth would fuel desperation for power and threaten Nigeria’s stability.
