The National Emergency Management Agency NEMA has directed residents in high-risk floodplain areas along the River Niger to evacuate to safer grounds without delay. The warning was issued today by NEMA Director-General, Zubaida Umar, following alerts of rising water levels upstream in the Republic of Benin.
NEMA offices in affected regions, particularly in Kebbi, Niger, and Kwara states, have been instructed to intensify community sensitization and mobilization efforts. Residents are advised to remain vigilant, follow evacuation instructions, and stay updated on flood warnings.
The director-general also called on state governments to strengthen their Emergency Management Agencies SEMAs and Local Emergency Management Committees LEMCs to implement contingency plans and preparedness measures. NEMA reaffirmed its commitment to coordinated actions to safeguard lives and livelihoods along the River Niger, stressing the need for clear evacuation routes and emergency contact plans.
