Nigerien Army Kills Boko Haram leader Mahamadou

The Nigerien army says it has killed Boko Haram leader Ibrahim Mahama-dou, also known as Bakoura, in an airstrike on Shilawa Island in southeastern Niger.

The operation took place on August 15, with fighter jets launching three successive strikes on positions previously occupied by the militant commander.

The army said Mahama-dou, a Nigerian national in his forties, had been a member of Boko Haram for 13 years and assumed leadership of the group in 2021 following the death of Aboubacar Shekau, stating that his death occurred near the Lake Chad basin, a region straddling Niger, Nigeria, Chad, and Cameroon.
