Chekwas Okorie, the founding National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), has warned that any attempt to increase the salaries of political leaders would be both reckless and provocative.
Speaking on Wednesday, Okorie criticised the proposal by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to review politicians’ pay upwards, describing it as an insult to the millions of Nigerians struggling to survive.
He said:
“What RMAFC is suggesting is pure insensitivity. Nigerians are suffering because of the very policies these politicians imposed. Instead of talking about salary increases, they should be considering a downward review.”
Okorie stressed that raising politicians’ emoluments at a time when ordinary citizens are battling hunger, unemployment, and high living costs would be nothing short of mocking their pain.
