The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has declared that workers, including civil servants, have the constitutional right to participate in partisan politics.
NLC President Joe Ajaero said the union was shocked by recent comments from the Head of Civil Service, Didi Esther Walson-Jack, claiming civil servants are barred from politics.
Citing Section 40 of the 1999 Constitution and a Supreme Court ruling, Ajaero said the law is clear: all Nigerians, including public servants, can freely join political parties or unions.
He added that the only requirement is for civil servants seeking elective office to resign 30 days before the election.
“The Head of Service’s position is not backed by law,” Ajaero insisted. “We encourage workers to take part in politics as part of their civic duty.”
