White House Joins TikTok Despite Looming Ban

The White House has officially launched a TikTok account, even as a nationwide ban on the Chinese-owned platform draws closer.

Under a 2024 U.S. data protection law, TikTok is required to cease operations by January 19 unless parent company Byte-Dance sold its U.S. branch. Within hours of going live, the @WhiteHouse account attracted over 80,000 followers, debuting with a video montage of President Trump captioned.

President Trump, who previously labeled TikTok a national emergency over data privacy and censorship concerns, has maintained an active personal account with more than 15 million followers. Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the new White House presence aims to build on the President’s campaign success on the platform.
