President Bola Tinubu has scrapped the controversial 5 percent excise duty on telecommunications services, following several criticism from industry players and consumers.
Executive Vice-Chairman of the Nigerian Communications Commission NCC, Aminu Mai-da, announced the development explaining that while the tax had been suspended in 2023, it has now been permanently removed under updated national tax laws.
The President had halted the tax in July 2023 to ease multiple tax burdens on households and businesses. Attempts by lawmakers to reintroduce it in 2024 met strong resistance, with industry groups warning it would harm affordability and stall growth in Nigeria’s fast-expanding digital economy.
