Jonathan: Why IBB’s Home Remains a ‘Mecca’ for Nigerians

Former President Goodluck Jonathan has described former military ruler General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida’s Minna hilltop mansion as a “Mecca of sorts” for Nigerians because of his enduring leadership influence.

Jonathan made the remark on Sunday while leading dignitaries to celebrate IBB’s 84th birthday.

“Nigeria has produced many leaders since independence, but Babangida stands out as one who genuinely worked for national unity,” Jonathan said. “That is why his home attracts so many visitors—it speaks to his character.”

He praised IBB for rising above sectional politics and for his role in shaping Nigeria’s path to unity. Jonathan prayed for the retired general’s continued good health so he could keep mentoring younger leaders.

The low-key birthday featured prayers and symbolic gifts, with political leaders and friends joining the celebration.
