The Abia State Government says it has paid 340 out of 461 staff of Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic, Aba, who were dismissed between 2018 and 2021.
Governor Alex Otti disclosed this at a briefing in Umuahia, saying the remaining affected workers would be paid after verification. He promised that those unfairly sacked would be reinstated after a probe into the mass dismissal.
Otti also announced that the polytechnic had attracted ₦2 billion in funding from TETFund. He further dismissed opposition claims that ₦54 billion budgeted for education had been squandered, revealing instead that ₦14.43 billion had been spent on retrofitting 61 schools by June 2025.
On the newly approved $125 million Islamic Development Bank loan, Otti said there was little risk involved except for foreign exchange fluctuations. He also ordered the construction of an isolation and treatment centre at Abia State Specialist Hospital, Amachara.
